Ready to get started? Alright, here we go!
BBF: To start things off, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself, your books?
HA: I’m a registered nurse and the mother of 4 mostly grown boys. The third book in my trilogy came out November 30th and it’s a great feeling to have a completed series! The FIVE series takes you into the world of the Quinae Praesidia–The Five Protectors–as they first learn of their magical abilities, find each other, and discover that Demons and other monsters are real. Five tough teenagers take on the unseen foes of humankind, battling to save the lives and souls of those who get too close.
BBF: Oh! The FIVE series sounds very much like my kind of read. Must check it out. Where do you come up with the ideas for your stories?
HA: Sometimes dreams–such as with the first book in my series when I dreamed of a group of kids in an underground setting running from someone or something. Many of my ideas come from just watching the world around me–inspiration can strike anytime, anywhere. I try to always have a notebook close by so I can write ideas down in the moment, otherwise I’ll forget.
BBF: Do you see yourself writing in the same genre? How important or not important is including romance in what you write?
HA: I’m going to branch off from YA for my next two projects, but I’ll be back to it, it’s my favorite genre to read and I really enjoy writing it, too. I think in the YA genre, at least a little bit of romance is expected, but it isn’t the main focus of my stories.
BBF: This is something I’m always curious about, probably because I’m so picky about it when I write, but how do you choose names for your characters? Is it whatever comes to mind, or do they have meaning?
HA: I have a really hard time with this. The main characters in my series are named after two of my boys, two of my nieces, and the husband of one of my nieces. I research for some characters–especially the bad guys. I chose a name for the main bad guy from a list of names with negative meanings. I’m also a collector of names–when I see a good name out in the world, I add it to my list of possible character names.
BBF: What are you currently working on? And what can we expect from you in the future?
HA: Currently I’m working on a short story for an Anthology I was asked to participate in (I’m almost done with it). Next in line is to finish a project I started a while ago–it’s a Romantic Thriller. I have an idea for a middle grade book that I’m pretty excited about and a new idea for another YA that I wanted to start writing the second the idea popped into my head. I wish I had more time to write!
BBF: What are you most looking forward to about visiting Boise Book Fest?
HA: I just LOVE Idaho! I’m looking forward to meeting new people and telling them about my books.
Describe your books in 3 words: Intense, teens, magic.
Favorite thing about your genre: Teens feel things so much stronger, everything is a new experience and it’s fun to write that.
A genre that I would love to write: Horror
When writing, night owl or morning person? Definitely not a morning person! But, not really a night owl either. I write best when I can sneak it in during the day (sometimes even while I’m at work…).
When I’m writing I must have: earphones and Pandora–I have to block the world out.
Pantser or Plotter? Pantser.
I’m currently reading: Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson
My guilty pleasure: Reading, of course.
My favorite cover from my books: I love all three of them. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be for book two, Five Out of the Pit because I love the sunset in it. The kids on the covers are my two sons, my two nieces, and my niece’s husband.
Number one book boyfriend is: Harry Dresden
